Movie Review of Soul Surfer

Bethany Hamilton is a young girl who grew up in Hawaii in a household with professional surfers as parents and 2 older brothers, this is why she has also proven to be a highly skilled surfer at her young age. Her life took a sudden turn for uncertainty when she became a victim of a shark attack that left her with a severed left arm. This fact did not stop Bethany on what she really wanted which is to become a professional surfer. The film had a much deeper message than merely winning, it is such an inspiring movie which was a huge surprise to me.

As the movie started, I expected a TV-movie type of film, what I did not realize is that Soul Surfer is such an inspiring movie that is quite moving. I admit that there are very few movies which have brought me to tears - this is one of them and for very good reasons. One quote that struck me is, "I don't mind difficult as long as it's possible." And it was indeed possible because she made it out to be. This is Bethany's story and how she proved that with resilience, prayer and love one person's tragedy can provide hope to all.

Book Review Of Skipping A Beat by Sarah Pekkanen

Michael and Julia are at the peak of their wealth as they have successfully built their individual companies from scratch. Michael made his fortune by developing flavored water, in fact, his company is worth $70 million. Julia, is a highly in-demand party planner. In the midst of their hectic lives, Michael has a heart attack and was pronounced dead for over 4 minutes. He awoke with a new purpose and a deeper understanding of what is truly important in life. As he tries to undo the errs of his past transgressions, he encounters resistance from Julia who is now more attached to the finer things in life. They were once high school sweethearts, but how could they rekindle the once love-filled past when a mountain of resentment and bitterness has been built in their years of marriage and busy lifestyle?  Can a 4-minute heart attack truly make a difference in one's perceptive of what matters most?

I was captivated by the writing and it's refreshing concept, it was so easy for me to connect with Julia. There were moments that made me laugh as I understood her pain.  Especially as she was trying to rationalize the material possessions that provided her with much security and comfort, such as when she said, "I want my heated floor," deep inside, I said, me too. It is not often that one finds a poignant story with such plausible characters that a lot can relate to. Michael and Julia were childhood sweethearts and as success and the complexity of life drove them apart, uncertainty is bringing them together.  This novel is very well written that as soon as I wiped my tears away (during the end of the story), I immediately made a list of who I want to share this wonderful novel with, this is a highly recommended read.

If you've read it, please let me know what you think. I'm also talking my husband into reading this, but he is not much of a fiction reader.

*I won this book in the Writer's Corner contest.
